Okuta-Didan Mine is the major producer of Nigerian Phenakite.
Natural Phenakite is difficult to discern from other minerals so we had the crystals tested using a refractometer to verify their authenticity. The Phenakite Gem can be cut and polished and is very attractive.
Rough Phenakite is a silicate with a hexagonal crystal structure. Named after ‘Phenax’, a Greek word meaning deceiver, because of a strong similarity to quartz. Natural Phenakite is harder than quartz at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale and when cut displays a brilliance that is just short of diamond.
Sometimes this stone is referred to as Phenacite, especially in the Metaphysical world where it is part of the Synergy 12.
How do we know our Phenakite’s are real?
