A wavy shaped lustrous complete Gibeon Meteorite from Namibia. "The Gibeon is one of the must-have iron meteorites because of its durability, resistance to rust, and varied and interesting shapes." quoted McKenzie, Ronnie (2014). Meteorites: A southern African perspective.
This specimen has a unique shape and structure and are remnants of meteors from outer space that have survived the fiery journey through earth's atmosphere and landed on our planet.
Gibeon meteorites were discovered by the Nama people and used by them to make tools and weapons.
In 1836 the English captain J. E. Alexander collected samples of the meteorite in the vicinity of the Fish River and sent them to London. There John Herschel analyzed them and confirmed for the first time the extraterrestrial nature of the material.
The term Gibeon encompasses the whole meteoritic material fallen from the sky during this fall. This material is classified as an iron meteorite belonging to the chemical group IVA.
