This Shona Sculpture is a group of 5 Hippos carved in Lepidolite. This very large, dynamic, highly detailed piece is a unique, ornamental sculpture from the Chitungwiza Art Centre in Zimbabwe.
This piece is highly textured, with strong variations and veining throughout the piece. One of the hippos has a seam running across its back - this is a natural feature of the stone where it has self-healed (see last photo for a closeup). This is a real showpiece!
This listing is for this specific piece - you will receive the item photographed.

Lepidolite is a calming stone. It is a type of mica, not to be confused with amethyst.
The Chitungwiza Art Centre is Zimbabwe’s largest arts cooperative, with numerous prolific sculptors and artists that Nharo visits often.
Nharo started traveling to Zimbabwe in late 2002 and has been traveling back and forth ever since, doing business with various art cooperatives and individuals. We work to bring beautiful, original pieces to the North American market.
