"Pondering Chief" in Verdite, signed by Simbai Kamombo, Shona Sculpture from Canon Paterson Craft Society, Mbare, Zimbabwe
This Shona Sculpture from Zimbabwe was carved by Simbai Kamombo, and signed by the prolific sculptor from the Chikwana Guzha Township. Simbai first learned under the tutelage of Farai Mangenda, from whom he learned fine art sculpting for four years.
The “Pondering Chief” is made from Verdite, and has lovely green, yellow and blue hues that are a naturally occurring formation in Verdite.
Verdite is only found in South Africa and Zimbabwe, as a relatively soft stone with a hardness of 3, it is perfect for carving. This stone is quite important, as it is believed to have an innate ability to promote fertility and love.
