This specimen is from an old collection at Tsumeb Mine , Otjikoto, Namibia. Tsumeb is the world's greatest mineral locality - a source for more than 250 different minerals, of which 100 minerals qualify as the best of species worldwide, and 40 are unique to Tsumeb (Tsumeb, Georg Gebhard)
Since Nharo began buying minerals in the early 2000's we have been traveling to Kunene, formerly the Kaokoveld, in Namibia. At the time we were buying crafts from the tribal Himba and Herero people as well. We used local guides to find the places where people were digging. It was hit and miss. When we would hit it was spectacular dioptase on the menu which we always did well with. When we missed, well, the scenery was nice.
Having a strong network of small scale miners and agents pays dividends in the long run. We are still in touch with the same people. Large crystals and clusters of crystals are rare. We are more used to seeing small sprays of crystals across a matrix. These pieces are special.
When crystal healers talk about dioptase they talk about the heart chakra.
It is also known as "one of the best healing stones of the age", and helps one live in the moment (Melody, Love is In the Earth, p. 245). It also helps one "open their third eye to see the root of a problem and can help one to gain the wisdom to correct what is neglected".
