This Shona Sculpture “Serene Hippopotamus” comes from the Chitungwiza Art Centre in Zimbabwe, it is initialed by the unknown artist.

The Hippopotamus is carved from Dolomite, and is a pure light coloured sculpture with shades of white, grey and a light yellow filtering through when viewed in the sun. This hippo emanates feelings of tranquility and peace, with soft carvings and smooth lines. 

Dolomite is a common stone used in sculpture. It is a calcium and magnesium carbonate mineral with powerful calming and rooting energies which come straight from the Earth.
